OKCupid.com is an online dating site that allows its members to save their money for the actual date! Overview

Chris Coyne, Sam Yagan, Christian Rudder and Max Krohn created the site and it launched on March 5, 2005 Today it is owned by InterActiveCorp, the same company that owns Match.com and Chemistry.com. OKCupid helps both homosexual and heterosexual couples to find love, and that might be pretty easy seeing the site has 3.5 million active users as of September 2010. The users are pretty buy on OKCupid too since over 1.3 unique visitors were clocked into the site in February 2011. OKCupid was recognized as one of Time’s 2007 Top Ten Dating Sites.

Package/ Features

On OKCupid, users can sign up and start answering questions to reveal their personality. They will also receive a list of nearby potential matches, and the ability to communicate with anyone who sparks their interest. Profiles are able to add photos, and these photos can be of decent quality, so unlike some other free dating sites, users can actually see the other member instead of a blurry facsimile thereof. OKCupid is also geared towards those who are just looking for friends and could be used a social network instead of a dating service. Since not all users on the site are necessarily single, this could take some of the pressure off of the shyer users. OKCupid seems like a nice place, and overall most of its users seem like decent people. However, since the site is free, users need to use common sense. It is entirely possible that a user, who looks like Tyra Banks, isn’t Tyra Banks or a striking look-alike. Instead it could be a poser with entirely too much time on their hands. Finally, OKCupid is not only a web app, but it also offers an iPhone and Android application or a mobile version of its site.

How It Works

When users sign up for OKCupid, the process is incredibly fast and simple. Once inside the community, OKCupid starts asking questions and there are tons of surveys or quizzes one can take. OKCupid compiles all of these answers in order to gauge its members’ personalities and make more meaningful match recommendations to its users. This is nice since a new user doesn’t get burned out on the site from a absurdly long test before they even start using it. Users can register and start poking around OKCupid and get comfortable with it and the community before they start putting themselves “out there.”

Testimonials

OKCupid has brought together a ton of couples in all kinds of circumstances. There are even some OKCupid babies as a result of the site! Please take a look at the OKCupid success stories by visiting: http://www.okcupid.com/success

Pricing

The beautiful thing about OKCupid is that most of its features can be accessed for free. The site is supported by advertising revenue from the banner ads located throughout the platform. OKCupid does offer an ad-free browsing experience through something they call their “A-List Subscription.” Members of this service receive the ability to browse through users anonymously, a huge storage capacity of up to 5,000 messages and the convenience of using OKCupid and not having to see the banner ads. A-List costs users $14.95 per month.

Registration

New users can sign up for OKCupid by providing their gender, orientation and status (i.e. I’m single or I’m here for friends, etc.). Also, the site will request that they input their birthdate, location, zip code and email address. Finally, new accounts just need to have a username and password assigned to them and then that’s it! Users will be able to access the OKCupid online dating services. This is a much easier process than most other online dating services. Of course, users can then start building their profile or completing the personality tests. However, this isn’t forced upon the new user as it is elsewhere.

Customer Support

Users who have any issues with OKCupid can reach out to their support team by submitting their questions on a feedback form located on the site. Additionally, OKCupid.com has an extensive list of FAQ’s for users to diagnose their issues quickly on their own.

Bottom Line

For those who are interested in online dating, but who don’t want to fork out the cash to experiment, OKCupid could be the ticket. The site is free for the most part, and this is a great benefit. However, it could also deter those who are really serious about finding that special someone. This is because OKCupid doesn’t have as many of the safeguards and validation tools as other online dating services…and people who want to fib about themselves online typically won’t pay to do so.
